A replica of the ship Pinta sailed by Columbus

Last month, Columbus’ ships, the Nina and the Pinta, visited my city. I could see the masts from the building where I work and the fantasy writer in me begged to go see them.

Our first stop wasn’t the faire but the Institute of Art in Chicago, Illinois, USA.  We arrived at 4pm and the Institute closed at 5pm.  We got in at half price and made our way to the medieval collection.  There wasn’t much, just some coats of armor.  But still very impressive.  I was amazed at how big the knights’ biceps were.   These were some big guys!!  We also saw a suit that was kinda small.  We found out later it was for teens only.  Don’t get any ideas, teens!!!

This solar-system montage of the nine planets and 4 large moons of Jupiter in our solar system are set against a false-color view of the Rosette Nebula. The light emitted from the Rosette Nebula results from the presence of hydrogen (red), oxygen ...

I subscribe to a wonderful blog call Speculative Faith. Today they featured the writer, Merrie Destefano who spoke on world building. She has some great but also obvious advice.

So, below is a list of some of the organic, world-building rules that this writer tries to live by:

    1. Set up your world so that it can have a natural evolution. For instance, try changing just one thing within our existing world—like P.D. James did in The Children of Men, where suddenly, no one could have children—then see how, over time, that one change could affect everything else in the world.

I discovered this link on my facebook page: Klingon Christmas Carol It seems kinda silly at first, but then as I watched it, my writer’s mind drooled with possibilities. The link describes an acting group who rewrote A CHRISTMAS CAROL making the characters Klingons from Star Trek fame. All the lines were in the Klingon language with English translations on a screen above the stage. The tale is about how Scrooge, now a Klingon, is a coward and is not living up to the Klingon codes and is visited by three ghosts who convince Scrooge that he must become brave in order to live as a Klingon.

A friend of mine invited me to the Bristol WI Reissuance faire last month. Bristol Renaissance Faire I wasn’t for sure what to expect. The last faire I attended in my tiny city was very small, consisting of a few venders, a sword show and a majestic jousting program. The sword show and jousting were the only good things about this faire. So my expectations were a little low. Bristol took my breath away.
